Text Styling for Social Media: Bold, Italic, Underline & More

Want to make your Instagram bio stand out? Create bold headers in Discord? Add italic text to Twitter posts? This guide shows you how to style text for any social media platform—without downloading any apps.

Quick tools: Use our text generators to create styled text:

How Unicode text styling works

Social media platforms don't support traditional formatting like HTML or rich text. But they do support Unicode—and Unicode includes special characters that look like styled text.

Our generators replace regular letters with Unicode equivalents:

StyleRegularUnicode
BoldHello𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼
ItalicHello𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰
UnderlineHelloH̲e̲l̲l̲o̲
StrikethroughHelloH̶e̶l̶l̶o̶

This styled text is still text—you can copy, paste, and use it anywhere!

Platform-by-platform guide

Instagram

Instagram doesn't support native text formatting, but Unicode works perfectly.

What works:

  • ✅ Bold text in bio and captions
  • ✅ Italic text anywhere
  • ✅ Underline and strikethrough
  • ✅ Special fonts like bubble text and gothic

How to use:

  1. Open a text generator (e.g., bold text)
  2. Type your text
  3. Copy the styled output
  4. Paste into Instagram

Example bio:

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿 📷
Capturing moments around the world
✈️ 30 countries and counting

Twitter/X

Twitter also works great with Unicode styling.

What works:

  • ✅ All Unicode text styles
  • ✅ Great for emphasis in tweets
  • ✅ Works in name, bio, and tweets

Example tweet:

Just launched! 🚀

Discord

Discord has built-in markdown, but Unicode adds more options.

Native Discord markdown:

  • **bold**bold
  • *italic*italic
  • ~~strikethrough~~strikethrough
  • __underline__underline

Where Unicode helps:

  • Usernames (markdown doesn't work)
  • Server names
  • Channel names
  • Nicknames
  • Role names

Use the bold text generator for these situations.

TikTok

TikTok supports Unicode styling in:

  • Display name
  • Bio
  • Video captions

Example bio:

𝙳𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚎𝚛 💃 | 𝚂𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚛 🎤
New videos every week!

Facebook

Facebook works well with Unicode styling in:

  • Posts
  • Page descriptions
  • Comments
  • Bio/intro section

LinkedIn

LinkedIn accepts Unicode in:

  • Posts and articles
  • Headlines
  • About section (use sparingly for professionalism)

Combining text styles

Create unique looks by combining styles:

  1. Generate bold text: 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲
  2. Add underline to the result: 𝗛̲𝗲̲𝗮̲𝗱̲𝗹̲𝗶̲𝗻̲𝗲̲

Mix and match for creative effects!

Best practices

Don't overdo it

  • Use styled text for emphasis, not entire posts
  • 1-2 styled elements per bio/caption is usually enough
  • Readability matters more than creativity

Test before posting

Different devices render Unicode differently. Preview on:

  • iOS and Android
  • Desktop and mobile
  • Light and dark mode

Keep accessibility in mind

  • Screen readers may read styled text differently
  • Keep important information in regular text
  • Use styling for decoration, not critical content

Stay platform-appropriate

  • LinkedIn: Minimal styling for professionalism
  • Discord: More styling accepted in gaming communities
  • Instagram: Styled bios are common and expected

Common issues

Some characters don't convert

Only A-Z, a-z, and 0-9 have Unicode styled equivalents. Punctuation and emojis stay the same.

Text looks broken on some devices

Older devices or fonts may not support all Unicode characters. Test before posting important content.

Copy-paste isn't working

Make sure you're selecting the styled output, not the input. Try selecting all with Ctrl+A / Cmd+A in the output field.

More decorative text options

Beyond basic styling, try these creative effects:
