Markdown tables are good for documentation, README files, blogs and developer work. CSV files are better for spreadsheets, databases and data imports. This Markdown to CSV converter changes a Markdown table into comma-separated values. The tool shows a preview of the table. You can copy the CSV or download it as a .csv file.

Convert a Markdown Table to CSV

Paste a Markdown table into the box above. The tool reads the separator row (|---|---|) as the line between the header row and the data. The CSV shows immediately.

Markdown input:

| Name | Role | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Ana | Editor | Active |
| Luis | Developer | Pending |

CSV output:

Name,Role,Status
Ana,Editor,Active
Luis,Developer,Pending

To copy the result, click Copy CSV. To save a file, click Download CSV.

What Is Markdown?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language. You write plain text, and special characters tell the program how to show the text. For example, **bold** shows bold text.

People use Markdown on GitHub, in documentation, in CMS editors, in notes and in technical content. A Markdown table uses pipe characters (|) to separate columns. A row of hyphens (---) separates the header row from the data rows. Each line of text is one row.

What Is CSV?

CSV means "comma-separated values". A CSV file is plain text. Each line is one row, and a comma separates each value from the next value.

Excel, Google Sheets, databases, analytics tools and bulk import tools can all open CSV files. CSV is a simple format, so you can move a CSV file between different applications with no data loss.

If a value contains a comma, the value must have quotation marks around it. Then the comma stays in the cell. The converter adds these quotation marks automatically:

How to Convert Markdown to CSV

Paste the Markdown table

Paste the table into the Paste your Markdown table box. You can also click Upload file to open a .md or .txt file, or drop the file on the box. If the text has more than one table, the tool shows a button for each table. Click a button to select the table.

Check the header row

The tool uses the first row as the column headers. If you do not want the header row in the CSV, open More options and turn off Include header row.

Review the converted data

Examine the preview below the result. Make sure that each value is in the correct column. Look for missing values and special characters. The badge above the result shows the number of rows and columns.

Copy or download the CSV

Click Copy CSV to copy the text. Click Download CSV to save the markdown-table.csv file. If you open the file in Excel, turn on Excel-friendly download in More options first. This option keeps accented letters correct.

Markdown Table Formatting Rules

  • Put each row on its own line.
  • Separate the columns with pipe characters (|).
  • Put a row of hyphens in the second row.
  • Use the same number of columns in each row.
  • Keep the pipes for empty cells, for example | Ana | | Active |.
  • Put a backslash before a pipe character in a cell: \|.

Colons in the separator row set the alignment. The CSV format has no alignment, so the converter ignores the colons.

|---|---:|---|

Common Problems When Converting Markdown to CSV

  • Missing separator row. Text from chat tools sometimes has no |---| row. The converter adds the separator row automatically and reads the first line as the header.
  • Uneven numbers of columns. If a row has fewer cells, the converter adds empty cells. If a row has more cells, the CSV gets more columns.
  • Pipes inside cell text. Write a pipe in a cell as \|. If the backslash is missing, the pipe starts a new column.
  • Commas inside values. The converter puts quotation marks around these values, so the commas stay in the cell.
  • New lines within a cell. A Markdown cell cannot contain a line break. If a cell contains <br>, the converter changes it to a space.
  • Extra formatting characters. The converter removes **bold**, *italic* and code marks and keeps the text.
  • Empty rows or trailing pipes. An empty line stops a Markdown table. Remove empty lines inside the table. Pipes at the start and the end of a row are optional.
  • Markdown links and formatting in the output. By default, a link such as [Docs](https://example.com) changes to Docs. To keep the Markdown text, turn on Keep Markdown formatting.

Markdown to CSV Use Cases

  • Move a table from documentation into a spreadsheet.
  • Export a content inventory from a Markdown file.
  • Prepare product data for bulk changes in Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Change a comparison table into a structured dataset.
  • Import a table that people update manually into a database.
  • Use data from technical documentation in a different application.
