A URL slug is the readable part of a URL after the domain name. This slug generator changes a title or a phrase into a clean, SEO-friendly slug. You do not have to remove spaces, punctuation or unnecessary characters manually. Type a title in the box above to make your slug now.

Generate an SEO-Friendly URL Slug

Type a page title, a topic or a keyword in the box. The tool shows the slug immediately. The slug has lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only.

Input:

10 Best Marketing Tools for Small Businesses

Output (default settings):

10-best-marketing-tools-for-small-businesses

Output with "Remove numbers" and "Remove stop words" on:

best-marketing-tools-small-businesses

These two options are in More options. To copy the slug, click Copy slug. To make many slugs at the same time, type one title on each line. Then click Copy all slugs or Download CSV.

What Is a URL Slug?

A URL has three main parts:

  • Domain: the name of the website, for example example.com.
  • Path: the folders after the domain, for example /seo-tools/.
  • Slug: the last part, which identifies one page.
https://example.com/seo-tools/slug-generator

In this example, slug-generator is the page slug.

A readable slug tells users the topic of the page before they click the link. Websites use slugs for blog posts, product pages, category pages and landing pages.

How to Create a Good SEO Slug

Keep the slug short and descriptive

Use the fewest words that describe the page. Remove introductory phrases such as "how to" or "a guide to" if the slug is clear without them.

Include the primary keyword naturally

Use the main topic of the page if it describes the page correctly. Do not repeat the keyword. One time is enough.

Use lowercase letters

Lowercase URLs are easy to read. Some servers read /About and /about as two different pages. Lowercase letters prevent two versions of one URL.

Separate words with hyphens

Hyphens show where each word starts and stops. Users and search engines can then identify each word. Do not use spaces or underscores. A space changes to %20 in a URL. Google reads words that have an underscore between them as one word.

Remove unnecessary punctuation

Symbols, quotation marks, brackets and special characters make a URL difficult to read, type and share. Some characters change to codes such as %3F in the URL. The slug generator removes these characters for you.

Avoid dates unless they are essential

A slug without a date stays correct when you update the page. Use a date only for news or for archives that are about a specific time.

How to Use This Slug Generator

  1. Type a page title, a topic or a keyword in the box.
  2. Examine the slug that the tool shows.
  3. If necessary, change the words in the title or set the options.
  4. Click Copy slug.
  5. Paste the slug into the URL field of your CMS or website.

A shorter slug is not always a better slug. A clear and correct slug is more important than a slug without common words. For example, /how-to-tie-a-tie is clearer than /tie-tie. Keep a short word if the slug is not clear without it.

Common URL Slug Mistakes

  • The slug is too long. Search results cut long slugs, and long slugs are difficult to share. The tool shows a warning above 60 characters.
  • The slug has every word from the title. Use only the words that identify the topic.
  • The slug has random numbers. Numbers such as post-48213 do not tell users the topic of the page.
  • The slug changes after publication without a redirect. Old links then go to an error page. Add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new URL.
  • The slug has a date that is not necessary. The date makes the page look old after you update it.
  • The slug has uppercase letters. Uppercase letters can make two versions of one URL.
  • The slug repeats the keyword. Keyword stuffing, for example /seo-tools-best-seo-tools-seo, looks like spam to users.
  • Two pages have the same slug or almost the same slug. One URL can show only one page. Similar slugs make users and search engines unsure which page is correct. The tool marks duplicate slugs in a list.
