Four pages double spaced. Two pages single spaced. That's how many pages 1,000 words fills in Times New Roman 12 with one-inch margins, which is the setup nearly every school and journal assumes when they talk about pages at all.
Different fonts, spacing, and formats bend that number, and each case is below with its own answer.

How many pages is 1,000 words double spaced?
Four pages, and the math behind it is worth thirty seconds because it unlocks every other conversion.
A double-spaced page in 12-point Times New Roman holds about 250 words. So 1,000 words is 250 × 4. Single spacing doubles the words per page to roughly 500, which is why the single-spaced answer is two pages.
The "12-point" part matters more than people expect. Word and Google Docs both default to 11-point now, and 11-point fits about a tenth more words per page, so a document that "should" be four pages comes out at three and a half. Arial runs wider than Times and pushes the other direction. Margins over one inch shave off more.
And headings, block quotes, your name-and-date header. None of those are body words but all of them eat lines, so a real four-page paper often carries fewer than 1,000 words of actual writing.
How many pages is 1,000 words single spaced?
Two pages, near enough exactly, at about 500 words per single-spaced page.
Single spacing mostly shows up outside the classroom. Business letters, reports, statements of purpose. Worth knowing there that 1,000 words is two dense pages, and a two-page cover letter is longer than anyone hiring wants to read. Most working documents that "feel right" at a glance sit closer to 400 words than 1,000.
How many pages is a 1,000-word essay?
The same four double-spaced pages, and here's what that looks like as an actual essay skeleton.
- Introduction, 100 to 150 words
- Three body paragraphs around 250 words each
- Conclusion, about 100
Which is why 1,000 words is such a common assignment. It's the smallest size that forces a full argument with more than one supporting point.
A friend asked me to look over her "four-page" history paper last spring. It was 730 words in Verdana 14. Her teacher wanted double-spaced Times, a real target near 1,000 words, and she ended up writing till one in the morning. The conversion would've told her that on day one.
On stretching, briefly. Size 13 font and creative margins are visible from across a grading desk, and turning in four inflated pages of three pages of ideas tells your reader something you didn't mean to tell them. If you're short, add a counterargument and answer it honestly. That's 150 words that make the essay better instead of just longer.
Writing time, since it usually comes up next: a 1,000-word essay takes most students one to three hours of drafting, plus whatever the research needs. In my experience the estimate people make is half of what it turns out to be, at least on deadline night..
1,000 words in MLA or APA format
Both formats land on the same four double-spaced pages, because both specify 12-point type, double spacing, and one-inch margins.
What changes is the furniture around the essay.
- MLA adds a four-line heading block and a centered title on page one, so the text runs a few lines longer than a bare document. Roughly 4 pages, edging toward 4¼.
- APA (student version) adds a separate title page and a references page, so the document is closer to six pages while the essay itself stays four.
Purdue OWL's formatting guides cover the exact setup if your instructor pointed you at a style manual and left it there. Citations themselves count toward the word total in some courses and not in others, so check the syllabus, and the APA format generator saves some of the formatting time either way.
How many pages is 1,000 words handwritten?
About four pages of average handwriting on college-ruled paper. Large handwriting pushes toward six, and I've seen tiny cramped writing land it in three.
Handwriting roughly matches double-spaced type by coincidence, an average of 200 to 250 handwritten words per page. Wide-ruled paper holds less, so add a page there.
How many book pages is 1,000 words?
Around three and a half. A typical paperback holds 250 to 300 words per page once you account for trim size, chapter breaks, and dialogue whitespace.
Useful mostly in reverse. If you're drafting fiction and wondering what your chapter "feels like" in print, 1,000 words is a short chapter opening, and a 3,000-word chapter reads as about ten book pages.
Other word counts, converted
Same assumptions as the top of the page, Times New Roman 12, one-inch margins.
| Word count | Single-spaced | Double-spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | ½ page | 1 page |
| 500 | 1 page | 2 pages |
| 750 | 1½ pages | 3 pages |
| 1,000 | 2 pages | 4 pages |
| 1,500 | 3 pages | 6 pages |
| 2,000 | 4 pages | 8 pages |
| 2,500 | 5 pages | 10 pages |
| 3,000 | 6 pages | 12 pages |
| 5,000 | 10 pages | 20 pages |
| 10,000 | 20 pages | 40 pages |
Going the other way, a "one page" assignment means about 250 words double spaced, "two pages" means 500, and if the assignment doesn't say which spacing, it almost always means double.
Check the real number instead of estimating
The chart gets you close. Your actual document is the truth.
- Paste your text into the word and sentence counter. Counting runs in your browser, nothing gets uploaded.
- Compare against the limit, in words.
- If you pasted from Word or a PDF and the count looks inflated, strip hidden markup with the remove formatting tool and count again.
Word counters disagree slightly at the edges, by the way. Hyphenated terms, URLs, and emoji get tokenized differently from tool to tool, so a 998-word essay might read 1,004 somewhere else. For a hard cutoff, leave a 1% cushion.
Over the limit instead? The word frequency counter shows which words you lean on most, and the repeats are usually the easiest cuts.
FAQs
How many pages is 1,000 words in Google Docs? At Docs defaults (Arial 11, 1.15 spacing) it comes out near 2¼ pages. Switch to double spacing and Times New Roman 12 to match what a teacher means by four pages.
Does the count include the title, references, or footnotes? Usually no for titles and reference lists, and footnotes vary by course. The syllabus overrides every general rule.
Is the answer different on A4 paper? Barely. A4 is slightly narrower and taller than US Letter, and the per-page difference is a line or two, not enough to change the four-page answer.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words? About four minutes silently. Read aloud as a speech, six to eight minutes, so rehearse with a timer before trusting the math.
Is 1,000 words a lot? For a school essay it's a standard mid-length assignment. For a blog post it's on the short side of normal. This article is about 1,200.
