Use this tool to convert all caps to sentence case text without typing it again. Paste text that is IN CAPITAL LETTERS in the box above. The tool changes it to normal sentences immediately. The first word of each sentence keeps a capital letter. Acronyms such as USA, FAQ and PDF stay in capitals.
Change ALL CAPS Text to Normal Sentences
Input:
HI TEAM. PLEASE READ THE FAQ BEFORE YOU CALL HR. I'LL SEND THE PDF TO MR. SMITH TODAY!
Output:
Hi team. Please read the FAQ before you call HR. I'll send the PDF to Mr. Smith today!
The tool made these changes:
- The first letter of each sentence is a capital letter.
- The word "I" and contractions such as "I'll" keep a capital I.
- FAQ, HR and PDF stay in capitals because they are on the keep list.
- "Mr." keeps its capital, and the name after it gets a capital letter.
In the result, the highlighted words are the words that kept their capitals.
What the Converter Does Correctly
Simple converters change all letters to small letters and then capitalize the letter after each full stop. That method makes mistakes. This tool prevents these mistakes:
| Text in ALL CAPS | Simple converter | This tool |
|---|---|---|
I THINK I'M LATE. | I think i'm late. | I think I'm late. |
BRING FRUIT, E.G. APPLES. | Bring fruit, e.g. Apples. | Bring fruit, e.g. apples. |
IT COSTS 3.5 DOLLARS. | It costs 3.5 dollars. | It costs 3.5 dollars. |
SEND THE PDF TO THE USA. | Send the pdf to the usa. | Send the PDF to the USA. |
WE LIVE IN THE U.S. | We live in the u.s. | We live in the U.S. |
MY MP3 FILES FROM THE 1990S | My mp3 files from the 1990s | My MP3 files from the 1990s |
HE SAID "YES." THEN HE LEFT. | He said "yes." then he left. | He said "yes." Then he left. |
The tool also starts a new sentence on each new line. Lists and headings then start with a capital letter.
Day names such as Monday and month names such as June also get a capital letter. May, March and August are not changed, because they are also normal words.
Keep Names and Acronyms in Capitals
The tool cannot know which words are names. In ALL CAPS text, "LONDON" and "HOUSE" look the same. To keep a name or a special word:
- Open More options.
- Add the word to Keep these words as written, for example
London, Maria, Textavia. - Separate the words with commas.
The tool writes each listed word exactly as you typed it in the list. The list already has common acronyms such as USA, UK, EU, NASA, CEO, FAQ, PDF, URL and API. You can remove words from the list.
The list does not include words such as US or IT, because "us" and "it" are also normal words.
Mixed text: If some words already have small letters, turn on Keep words that already have small letters. Words such as iPhone and John then stay as you typed them.
How to Use This Tool
- Paste your ALL CAPS text in the box. You can also upload a .txt file.
- Examine the result. The highlighted words kept their capitals.
- If a name has no capital letter, add it in More options.
- Click Copy text, or click Download .txt to save a file.
Change All Caps to Sentence Case in Word and Excel
- Microsoft Word: Select the text. Click Home > Change Case (Aa) > Sentence case. Word does not keep acronyms or names in capitals, so read the result carefully.
- Excel and Google Sheets: There is no sentence case function. For text in cell A1, use this formula:
=UPPER(LEFT(A1,1))&LOWER(MID(A1,2,LEN(A1)))
This formula capitalizes only the first letter of the cell. It does not find the start of other sentences in the cell, and it changes acronyms to small letters. For text with many sentences, paste the text in this tool.
Why Not Write in All Caps?
- ALL CAPS is difficult to read. All capital letters have the same height. Readers cannot see the shape of the words, so they read more slowly.
- ALL CAPS looks like shouting. In emails and messages, many people read capital letters as anger.
- Sentence case is the standard for normal text. Most style guides use sentence case for body text, buttons and many headings.
For short labels, codes or signs, capital letters are correct. To make that type of text, use the small letter to capital letter converter.
