Count commas as you type
The comma counter counts each standard comma (,) in your text. The count changes when you type or paste text. Use the result to check punctuation or comma-delimited data. You can also compare the count before and after a text change.
How to use the comma counter
- Add your text: Type text in the input field. You can also paste text from a file or an application.
- Read the main count: The large result shows the number of standard commas.
- Check the breakdown: Read the totals for sections, lines with commas, and other comma marks.
- Copy the result: Select the copy icon next to the main result.
What counts as a comma?
The main result counts only the standard comma character , (Unicode U+002C). The tool counts each occurrence. It does not identify the grammatical function of a comma.

Similar characters are reported separately
Some languages and input methods use characters that look like a standard comma. These characters have different Unicode values. The result panel shows the fullwidth comma , (U+FF0C) and the Arabic comma ، (U+060C) separately. The main result does not include these characters. Use the separate result to find character differences.

Use this check after you change a long sentence. You can also use it when an editor requests fewer comma-separated clauses.

The tool counts characters. It does not count CSV fields. The tool includes commas in quoted CSV values and delimiter commas.
Find lookalike comma marks

A search, parser, or validation rule can ignore a character that looks like a standard comma. Use the separate result to identify this character.
Understanding your comma count
For text that is not empty, comma-separated sections equals the standard comma count plus one. Empty sections also count. Thus, one,,three has three sections.
The tool counts a line one time in lines with commas if the line has one or more standard commas. Five commas on one line give one line in this result.
The other comma marks result gives the total number of fullwidth commas and Arabic commas. The tool shows these characters separately. They do not change the main result.
Common mistakes when counting commas
- The tool does not give grammar advice.
- The tool does not identify thousands separators, decimal commas, list punctuation, code syntax, or CSV delimiters.
- The tool does not count semicolons, colons, apostrophes, or decorative symbols.
- The tool counts commas in quoted text because it counts characters, not document structure.
