This double space generator adds space to plain text. It can add a blank line between lines, two spaces between words, or spaces between letters. You can also use it as a double spacing generator for an essay. It copies your text with real double line spacing for Google Docs or Word.

How to Double Space Text

  1. Type or paste your text in Your text.
  2. Select Lines, Words or Letters.
  3. Select the amount of space. For lines, 2x (double) gives double spacing.
  4. Click Copy result.

For an essay, select Lines and click Copy for Docs/Word. Then paste the text into Google Docs or Word.

Double Spaced Lines

In Lines mode, the tool adds line breaks. With double spacing, one line break becomes two line breaks. Each line then has one blank line after it:

First line

Second line

Third line

The words do not change. The tool changes Windows and old Mac line endings to standard line breaks. By default, the tool keeps larger gaps between paragraphs. When you clear Keep larger paragraph gaps, each group of line breaks gets the amount that you select.

When you use Lines mode two times, the spacing does not double again. You can use this mode to correct text that has a mix of single and double line breaks.

Double Spacing for Google Docs and Word

A blank line in plain text is not the same as double line spacing in a document. When a paragraph wraps to more lines, a blank line does not add space between those lines.

Copy for Docs/Word copies each line of your text as a paragraph with real line spacing. For 2x (double), the line spacing is 200%. The copy does not add blank lines.

Paste the text into Google Docs or Word, then examine the line spacing setting there. Some editors ignore the format of pasted text. In these editors, set the line spacing in the editor.

Double Spaces Between Words

In Words mode, the tool replaces each group of spaces or tabs between two words with the number of spaces that you select. The tool keeps the indent at the start of a line, the spaces at the end of a line, and all line breaks.

One small change.

Some websites show many spaces as one space. The copied text still contains all of the spaces. Code editors and plain-text editors show all of the spaces.

Spaces Between Letters

In Letters mode, the tool adds spaces between the letters of each word. Some characters, such as accented letters and emoji, contain more than one Unicode code point. The tool keeps each of these characters together, so it does not break them.

Letter spacing changes the characters in the text. It can change search results, screen reader speech, line wrap and exact text matches. When you change the letter spacing, always start from your original text.

Privacy

The tool works in your browser. It does not upload your text or save it. To remove spacing, use the text cleaner or the line-break remover.
