Capital Letters in Word, Google Docs and Excel

You can also change small letters to capital letters in other apps:

  • Microsoft Word: Select the text and press Shift+F3. Each press changes the case: UPPERCASE, lowercase, then Capitalize Each Word. On a Mac, press Fn+Shift+F3. You can also click Home > Change Case (Aa) > UPPERCASE.
  • Microsoft Outlook: Select the text and press Shift+F3.
  • Google Docs: Select the text. Click Format > Text > Capitalization > UPPERCASE.
  • Excel and Google Sheets: Type =UPPER(A1) in an empty cell to change the text in cell A1 to capital letters. Type =PROPER(A1) to capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • iPhone and Android keyboards: Tap the Shift key two times to turn on Caps Lock. On iPhone, make sure that Settings > General > Keyboard > Enable Caps Lock is on.

These methods work in one app only. This tool works for text from any app, and you can paste the result anywhere.

When to Use Capital Letters

  • Forms and documents: Some forms tell you to write your name and address in capital letters (BLOCK LETTERS).
  • Headings and signs: Short headings, labels and buttons in capital letters are easy to see.
  • Codes and IDs: Product codes, booking references and postcodes often use capital letters only.
  • Programming: Constants and environment variables use capital letters. For names such as API_KEY, use the screaming snake case converter.

Do not write long text in capital letters. Text in ALL CAPS is difficult to read, and many people read it as shouting.

Common Mistakes

  • Text in capital letters that you must change back. Use the all caps to sentence case converter. It changes the text back to normal sentences and keeps acronyms such as USA.
  • Fancy letters that do not change. Some "fonts" from font generators are Unicode symbols, not letters. They do not have capital forms. Convert them to normal letters first with the Unicode to NonUnicode converter.
  • The letter ß becomes SS. In German, ß has no traditional capital letter, so the capital form is SS. This is correct, but the text becomes one character longer.
  • Hidden formatting in pasted text. Text from web pages or emails can have invisible characters. Remove them with the text cleaner first.
