How to Read and Write Roman Numerals

Rule 1: Addition

When a symbol of equal or smaller value follows a larger one, add the values together.

VI = 5 + 1 = 6
XIII = 10 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 13
MCL = 1000 + 100 + 50 = 1,150

Rule 2: Subtraction

When a smaller value appears before a larger one, subtract the smaller from the larger. There are exactly six valid subtractive pairs:

IV = 5 − 1 = 4
IX = 10 − 1 = 9
XL = 50 − 10 = 40
XC = 100 − 10 = 90
CD = 500 − 100 = 400
CM = 1000 − 100 = 900

Rule 3: Repetition Limit

No symbol repeats more than three times in a row. That is why 4 is IV (not IIII) and 9 is IX (not VIIII). The symbols V, L, and D are never repeated.

Worked Example: 1994

Break 1,994 into place values and convert each part:

1000 = M
900 = CM
90 = XC
4 = IV
1994 = MCMXCIV

Rule 1: Addition

Equal or smaller symbols after a larger one are added.

Brief History of the Roman Numeral System

The system evolved from Etruscan tally marks around the 7th century BCE. Symbols were standardized during the late Roman Republic (roughly 100 BCE) and dominated European numbering for over a thousand years (Smith, D.E., History of Mathematics, Dover, 1958).
