Background Remover - Free Online Tool
What is a background remover?
A background remover cuts the subject out of an image and makes the background transparent. Use it for product photos, profile pictures, and design assets when you need a clean cutout you can place on any color. Background removal runs locally in your browser, so your image is not uploaded for processing.
How to use the background remover
- Upload an image: Choose a photo from your device (JPG, PNG, WebP, and more).
- Choose quality and output: Pick the model and output format (PNG for transparency, WebP or JPG for smaller files).
- Download the result: Save the cutout to your device and use it anywhere.
Why use this background remover?
- Cleaner visuals: Create transparent cutouts for listings, thumbnails, and profile images.
- More control: Choose CPU or GPU (when supported), then pick a model for speed vs quality.
- Privacy-first processing: The background removal happens on your device in your browser.
How the settings work
If you want a fast result, leave the defaults. When edges matter (hair, fur, product outlines), these settings change the output:
Device (CPU vs GPU)
- Auto: Uses the best option available on your device.
- CPU: Most compatible; can be slower on large images.
- GPU (WebGPU): Faster on supported browsers and hardware. If your browser does not support WebGPU, use Auto or CPU.
Model (speed vs quality)
- Balanced: Good default for most images.
- High quality: Better edges on difficult subjects; can take longer.
- Small: Faster downloads and quicker runs; useful on slower devices.
Output format and quality
- PNG: Best when you need transparency.
- WebP: Smaller files for the web; can keep transparency depending on your settings.
- JPEG: No transparency; use it when you plan to place the cutout on a solid background.
Use case 1: E-commerce product photos
Take a quick product photo on a table, remove the background, then place the cutout on a pure white background for marketplaces and store listings.
Use case 2: Profile pictures and avatars
Remove the background from a headshot so your avatar looks consistent across Slack, Discord, LinkedIn, and forums.
Use case 3: Design assets and stickers
Make transparent PNG cutouts for slides, mockups, or sticker-style graphics without opening a desktop editor.
Examples
Basic example
Input: product-photo.jpg (subject on a messy desk)
Output: product-photo.png (background removed, transparent PNG cutout)
Advanced example (quality and file size)
Input: team-headshot.jpg
Settings: Model: High quality, Output: WebP, Quality: 80
Output: Smaller cutout you can use on the web while keeping clean edges.
Common errors
First run is slower than expected
On first use, your browser downloads the background removal model and runtime assets. After that, they are cached for faster future runs.
Edges look rough (hair, fur, thin objects)
Background removal depends on image quality and contrast. Use a higher-resolution image, increase lighting on the subject, and try the High quality model for cleaner edges.
GPU mode is unavailable
GPU mode requires WebGPU support. If your browser or device does not support it, switch Device to Auto or CPU.
The output has no transparency
JPG does not support transparency. Choose PNG (transparent) or WebP if you need a transparent background.
Tips and proven approaches
- Start with a clear subject: Sharp focus and strong contrast make a bigger difference than any setting.
- Pick the right output format: Use PNG for transparency, WebP for smaller web files, and JPG only when transparency is not needed.
- Strip hidden metadata before sharing: If your photo might contain EXIF GPS data, remove it with the image metadata (EXIF) viewer + stripper.
- Keep the original file: If you need to re-run removal later, start from the original image for the best result.

- Resize and compress the cutout for web or listings with the image resizer & compressor.
- Convert the final PNG for faster websites with PNG to WebP.
- Embed the cutout directly in HTML or CSS with the image to Base64 converter.
Privacy and security
Background removal runs locally in your browser. Your image is not uploaded to a server for processing. The only network activity is downloading the model assets on first use, which your browser can cache for faster future runs.
