How the conversion works

JPEG compression divides an image into 8×8 pixel blocks and applies the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) to approximate visual information. This process is lossy — some data is permanently discarded. When you convert a JPG to PNG, the converter decodes the JPEG pixel data and re-encodes it using PNG's lossless DEFLATE compression. Every pixel in the decoded JPEG is preserved exactly in the PNG output.

Important caveat: Converting to PNG does not restore quality that was already lost during JPEG compression. It prevents further loss from subsequent edits and saves. Think of it as "freezing" the current quality level.

Common errors

Output file is much larger than the input

PNG files are typically 3–5× larger than equivalent JPGs. This is the trade-off for lossless quality. For web delivery, consider keeping photos as JPG or converting to WebP (PNG to WebP) for the best of both worlds.

Image still has compression artifacts

Converting JPG to PNG does not remove existing JPEG compression artifacts (blocky edges, color banding, "mosquito noise"). The damage from JPEG compression is baked into the pixel data permanently. PNG simply prevents additional degradation.

Can't add transparency directly

The converter outputs a flat PNG with a solid background. To add transparency, use an image editor or Textavia's background remover after conversion.
