Is your image a photograph?

Go WebP if you're publishing online. The file will be noticeably smaller than JPG, and browser support is no longer an issue. If you're sending via email or the recipient's software is picky, JPG is the safe bet. Either way, quality 80–85 is the sweet spot.

PNG is the classic pick here, and it's lossless. WebP gives you transparency at a smaller file size, which is great if you're optimizing for the web. If the graphic is simple enough (logos, line art), SVG handles transparency natively. JPG? No transparency, full stop.

Does it need to scale to any size?

That's what SVG is for. A vector file looks crisp whether it's rendered at 16 pixels for a favicon or blown up on a billboard. Logos, icons, diagrams, line illustrations, that sort of thing. Just don't try to use it for a photo.

Coming from an iPhone or iPad?

Those .heic files are Apple's default since iOS 11. Most Windows PCs and web platforms still don't handle them well. JPG is the easiest fix for sharing, PNG if you want lossless output, WebP if performance matters and the destination supports it.

Same idea as MP3 audio. The encoder looks at the image and throws away data your eyes probably won't miss: subtle color shifts, fine noise in dark areas, that kind of thing. You can easily get a file 5–20× smaller than lossless. And honestly? At quality 80–85, you'd have to zoom in and squint to spot any difference.

Works like a ZIP: the file gets compressed, but nothing is discarded. Open it, re-save it, edit it again, the pixels stay identical. The catch is size. A photograph saved lossless easily runs 5–10× bigger than a JPG of the same shot. That's fine for archiving or professional editing, but overkill for your blog.

Honestly, we built these because the existing options annoyed us. Most "free" converters upload your photos to some server you know nothing about, process them with mystery settings, and sometimes even sneak in tracking pixels. We didn't want that for our own images, so we wrote converters that run 100% client-side with the Canvas API and Web Workers. No upload, ever.

Here's a real example: we took a 4.2 MB HEIC from an iPhone 15 Pro, ran it through our JPG converter at quality 85, and the output was 1.1 MB. Pixel-peeping at 100% on a Retina screen, we couldn't find a difference. For fun, we also saved it as a lossless PNG: 12.7 MB for a result that looked identical. That experience is why the quality slider defaults to 85 in our lossy converters.

If someone asks us what format to use, the answer is almost always WebP. Files come out about 30% smaller than comparable JPGs, you get transparency if you need it, and browser support is solid across the board. We still fall back to JPG for email (Outlook can be stubborn) and for print shops that insist on TIFF or PNG.

FAQ about Image Conversion
No, and this is one of the most common misconceptions. Once JPG discards data during compression, that information is gone for good. Wrapping the result in a PNG container won't bring it back. You'll end up with the same visual quality but a much bigger file. The only reason to go JPG → PNG is if you need transparency support or a specific app won't accept JPG.
For web use, almost always. Google's own benchmarks show WebP producing files 25–34% smaller than JPG at the same perceived quality. On top of that, WebP handles transparency and animation, which JPG can't do. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all support it now, so the old browser-compatibility argument doesn't really hold up anymore.
Yes, always. JPG has no concept of transparency. When you convert, every transparent pixel gets filled in with a solid background color (white in most converters, sometimes black). If keeping that transparency matters, you're better off going to WebP instead, or just staying with PNG.
